a shared dilemma
It probably happened to you much the same way it happened to us...our stories are all so similar, aren’t they? It’s like we are all part of this awful fraternity that we never signed up for. Out of nowhere and completely unexpected we got the news: What? Really? Bed bugs? I thought it was just a silly jingle. Yeah, well, it's not. It is huge nationwide problem, including here in Tampa Bay and throughout Florida, which requires our immediate attention.
Our introduction to bed bugs occurred at our rental home in Hudson, Florida. We personally managed the property successfully for years and without issue, until one day we got a call about some “small bugs” inside the house. One of the large, name brand pest control companies went over to inspect and we were informed these weren’t just any bugs, but bed bugs. |
Wait, how much?!
We were quoted $850 for a series of four chemical treatments to treat just one bedroom and it would take six weeks to complete. We were also offered a $2,800 tent fumigation of the entire (small) house with Vikane gas (interestingly, we were not offered a heating solution). Not wanting this to spread even more, we entrusted the professionals and went with their chemical treatment due to incredible cost of fumigating. Going this route required the additional purchase of expensive mattress covers for each bed and box spring, doing extreme cleaning throughout the house and the laundering of all clothes and linens. Countless hours of work and extra money.
The first chemical service was somewhat inconvenient since no one could be inside during or for many hours following treatment. It took most of the day and the whole house smelled awful for days, like a cinnamon cocktail of who knows what. The subsequent three treatments were not much better. And, about two months after the final chemical treatment, the BED BUGS WERE BACK!
The pest control company told us they must be getting reintroduced from the folks living there and offered to re-treat at a slightly discounted price. So, perhaps foolishly, we did it all over again and just like before…. about two months later, the bed bugs RETURNED AGAIN! In the end, over $8000 was spent plus all those hours of laundry and cleaning to be back at square one.

kill bed bugs with heat?
We did what seemed like - and definitely was - many hundreds of hours of bed bug research. Turns out the chemical treatments alone only work as part of a multi-pronged approach and is not considered to be effective by itself. The eggs are not killed by pesticides and the bugs themselves were notorious for quickly adapting to the different active ingredients in the sprays. Plus the technician has to be able to find all their hiding spots to effectively treat.
We decided to ask about heat treatment, which seemed like a perfect, chemical free solution, only to find out it would cost between $2,500.00-$3,000.00. We were absolutely appalled at how expensive it was to kill bed bugs! There had to be a more affordable solution that would actually work. So, we decided to take a huge risk and purchase our own very expensive professional grade heating system and give it a try ourselves.
Set up was a breeze and usage was straight forward... Literally "push in the plugs, kill the bugs!" The bed bug killing power of our system was tremendous and we know that bed bugs cannot biologically adapt to the heat like they do with chemicals. The results were excellent!

a new venture
Just after the treatment, a neighbor told us he had a friend living in Wesley Chapel, Florida who has been struggling with bed bugs and wanted to rent our equipment. Turns out there are a large number of people and small businesses suffering from these parasites that, understandably, cannot afford to pay multiple thousands of dollars for professional exterminators (like we did) and are looking for a more cost effective solution.
For a couple of years following, we privately rented out our heating system to people within our social group and ‘friends of friends’, helping them cure their bed bug woes. They are typically people who travel for work and unexpectedly bring them home, people who bought a used piece of furniture from Craigslist, live in apartments (with neighbors who have bed bugs and don't treat them) or have kids in daycare or summer camp. We even helped a dentist with his waiting room! We walked them through the process of using the equipment themselves and passed along what we learned on how to be successful, with great results. It has been very rewarding, especially considering the psychological impact it can have over time. We eventually took our idea to the professional level and began formally renting our many different bed bug killing systems and acquired knowledge to anyone in Tampa Bay and throughout Florida... and Bed Bugs Tampa Bay, and later, Bed Bugs Florida were born!
